Nació el 3 de junio de 1945 en Glasgow, Escocia. Estudió en el Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Está casado con la diseñadora Hildegard Bechtler. Tiene un hijo y una hija.
Es miembro fundador de la compañía de teatro escocesa “7:84”. Tiene una larga y tupida trayectoria actoral.
En teatro, comenzó en 1967 con la obra The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui.
